These aren't in order, and you might have to teach Exercise #312 BEFORE you can teach Exercise 9: 1. Watching (face or whatever part of body is designated). 2. Targetting. 3. Spins on your heels (to stop you from taking steps) to the right. 4. Spins on your heels to the left. 5. Right squares: Dog in heel position, take one heeling step straight forward, then IN THE SAME LINE pivot 90 degrees to the right and HALT. Do it again, and again - dog gets instant feedback for coming quick around the corner, and instant feedback for finding the correct halt position. 6. Left squares: Dog in heel position, take one heeling step straight forward, then IN THE SAME LINE pivot 90 degrees to the left and HALT. This helps both handler and dog practise and understand the swing finish as part of heeling. 7. Swing finish. 8. Descending left spiral. 9. Descending right spiral. 10. Descending left spiral, when you get to the centre and are spinning left on your heels, stop and start spinning to the right and do an ascending right spiral. 11. Descending right spiral into an ascending left spiral. 12. Heeling backwards. 13. Slide right (handler moves one step sideways directly to the right, dog stays in heel position. 14. Left turns. 15. Right turns. 16. Left about turns. 17. Right about turns. 18. Slide right followed by an immediate left about turn (THAT separates the women from the girls!). 19. Sidewind butt in - try moving your focal point back but continue to walk straight ahead - you should be able to get the dog to sidewind by pulling his butt in behind you. 20. Sidewind head in - move your focal point forward but continue to walk straight ahead - get the dog to sidewind by pulling his head across in front of you. 21. Slow. Practise everything in slow motion. 22. Fast. Practise everything faster than normal. 23. Lead changes ( ;-D - not really) - SPEED changes - try changing speed every two steps. 24. Judge following - practise everything with another person walking tight up behind you. 25. Judge beside - practise everything with another person walking tight up beside the dog. 26. Judge beside - practise everything with another person walking tight up beside you. 27. Dog following - practise everything with another team walking tight up behind you. 28. Dog beside - practise everything with another team walking tight up beside the dog. 29. Dog beside - practise everything with another team walking tight up beside you. 30. War is good for business. 35. Peace is good for business. oops, wrong list... 34. Get cue control over heel position re spine direction. 35. Get cue control over heel position re sideways distance from handler. 36. Get cue control over heel position re forward/back distance from handler. 37. Get control over amount of enthusiasm dog puts into performance (with Giant Schnauzers, this is a BIGGIE - I'm betting it won't be quite as big a deal with the PWD). 38. Gain conscious knowledge of all your cues for all the Heeling Exercises. 39. Sit. 40. Sit on stopping cue. 41. Sit in heel position on stopping cue. 42. Find out when your dog must eat in order to give his best performance. 43. Find out what your dog must eat in order to give his best performance. 44. Find out how much your dog must eat in order to give his best performance. 45. Find out how much warmup your dog requires in order to give his best performance in familiar surroundings. 46. Find out how much warmup your dog requires in order to give his best performance in unfamiliar surroundings. 47. Condition the CR. 48. Condition a minimum of 2 other CRs. 49. Find a minimum of 10 Unconditioned Reinforcers. 50. Move the Unconditioned Reinforcers out of the working area. Well, that's a start - I was going to list 10 and let everyone else take it from there, but I got carried away. Take it from here - I left out almost ALL the really basic stuff... Sue eh? ailsby@duke.usask.ca Whew! 51. Clover leafs: heel forward one step, left turn, heel backward two steps, repeat until dizzy. (Teaches dog to get butt in after left turn.) 52. Catch-up: Sit dog, walk forward several steps without dog, stand still for a short time, command "Heel" and start walking forward, C/T when dog gets into heel position. (Teaches dog to catch up if it gets lost in a heeling pattern.) 53. Catch-up (double time): Same as Catch-up only run instead of walk after the Heel command. 54. Figure eight heeling backward.
