Okay, I've been looking (off and on) for days to find a good example of what I mean by elastic, drapey reins and I have finally found it! It's a short clip of Sergei Filitov schooling his dressage horse, Absent, before the 1960 Olympics in Rome.

The part that illustrates what I mean starts at about 10 seconds into the video. Towards the end of the clip, a newspaper actually blows towards Absent and through his front legs. Neither horse nor rider give it so much as a flicker of a glance; it just doesn't seem to exist in their universe because at that moment, they are in a universe that contains only the two of them.

As the two of them float through the movements, the reins appear to stretch. Watching it, I'm riveted to Filitov's hands. They are so soft, so flexible and so alive! That's what I'm hoping I can teach all of you.
